Knowing Common Cat Behavior:
August 8th is celebrated as International Cat Day and, this is the perfect occasion to delve into the fascinating world of feline behavior. Understanding their behavior not only strengthens a bond with a furry friend but also ensures well-being.
Let's take a closer look at some other typical behaviors and what they mean.
- Purring One of the most common sounds cats make is the purring sound. This sound is very familiar and endearing to cat owners, and normally, it means that the cat is happy and relaxed. Surprisingly, though, purring can also indicate other feelings and needs. Cats will sometimes purr even when frightened, in pain, or when hungry. That sound of comfort is a way of self-healing, using itself to calm down in almost all situations.
- Kneading Commonly referred to as "making biscuits," kneading is how a cat behaves when it rhythmically pushes its paws against a soft surface. This dates back to when they were kittens and kneaded their mother's belly, supposedly encouraging the flow of milk. Adult cats do it to express contentment, mark their territory with scent glands found in their paws, or prepare a cozy spot for resting.
- Tail Language The tail is what can help a cat communicate something powerfully. Here is a rapid guide to interpreting their tail movements: Upright Tail: The cat is usually happy and confident. Puffed Tail: The indication is that the cat is afraid or irritated. Low or Tucked Tail: This can indicate fear or submission. Twitching Tail: A tail that twitches or lashes back and forth can signal excitement or irritation.
- Slow Blinking When your cat looks into your eyes and blinks slowly, it is a sign that it loves you. A slow blink from a cat means they trust and feel comfortable with you. You can return it to your feline for increased bonding. Try slowly blinking back at your cat to show that you are safe and okay in its presence.
- Scratching This is a natural, normal practice for cats. This helps them to mark their territory, stretch their muscles, and maintain the health of their claws. Appropriate scratching posts and surfaces can redirect this behavior away from furniture. Be sure to have these posts be sturdy and covered in materials like sisal, which cats find satisfying to scratch.
- Hiding Many cats seek out hidden places where they can feel safe when they become stressed, scared, or just need some quiet time. Providing safe hiding places when your cat feels that it needs them is of utmost importance. Allow them to stay alone, and don't go poking around if they've hidden themselves away.
- Grooming Cats spend a lot of their time grooming themselves. This is very important to keep them clean and help in temperature control, and in the case of social grooming, to bond with others. If it's excessive, it may be trying to tell you the cat is stressed, allergic, or something else health-wise is going on. Monitor any changes and call your veterinarian if necessary.
- Chattering Does your cat ever make some odd chattering sounds while watching birds or other potential prey? It is actually thought to be an expression of frustration or excitement. It could also be a predatory reaction to prepare the muscles for a pounce.
The only way to make sure that your cat is leading a happy and healthy life is to understand its behavior. Understanding the meaning behind the way they act will be important in satisfying their needs so they may feel safe and loved in your home.
