Blog 7 - Keeping Cool in the Heat

As a responsible pet owner, it is crucial to understand how to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable during the hot summer months. Heatstroke is a serious condition that can be life-threatening for pets, so it is essential to take preventive measures to ensure their well-being.

Provide Ample Shade and Water

Make sure your pet has access to plenty of shade and fresh water at all times. Dehydration can occur quickly in hot weather, so it is important to keep their water bowl filled and placed in a shaded area.

Avoid Exercising in the Heat

Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the temperature is cooler. Asphalt and concrete can get extremely hot and burn your pet's paws, so stick to grassy areas for walks.

Use Cooling Products

Consider using cooling products such as cooling mats, vests, or bandanas to help regulate your pet's body temperature. These products can provide relief from the heat and keep your pet comfortable.

Recognize the Signs of Heatstroke

It is important to be able to recognize the signs of heatstroke in pets, which include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool place immediately and contact your veterinarian. While on the way to the vet you can apply cool wet towels to lower the pets body temperature.

Avoid Ice Baths

Contrary to popular belief, ice baths are not recommended for pets suffering from heatstroke. Placing a pet in an ice bath can actually cause their blood vessels to constrict, making it harder for them to cool down. Instead, use cool water to gradually lower their body temperature.

By following these tips and tricks, you can help keep your pet cool and safe during the hot summer months. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to heatstroke, so be proactive in keeping your furry friend comfortable and healthy.
